The dance of Odisha

Odissi is one of India's classical dance forms. It began in the temples of Odisha and is known for the tribhangi, a pose that bends the body at the head, chest and hip, and for the chauka, a square, grounded stance.

A dancer tells stories through mudras (hand gestures), footwork, and expression. We teach the technique and the meaning together, so students dance with understanding and not only with memory.

How an Odissi recital unfolds

  1. Mangalacharan An opening invocation. The dancer offers prayers and salutes the stage, the gurus and the audience.
  2. Sthayee Pure dance built on the basic stances and sculpted poses of Odissi, drawn from the stone carvings of Odisha's temples.
  3. Pallavi Graceful, flowing movement set to a raga and a tala. The melody and rhythm are explored step by step.
  4. Abhinaya Storytelling through expression, often from devotional poetry such as the Gita Govinda.
  5. Moksha The closing dance, fast and joyful, symbolising the soul's release.

Guru Smt. Sradhanjali Rowlo

Guru Sradhanjali Rowlo teaches at Odissi Kala Kunj, a venture of Sradha Trust. She is a disciple of Padmashree Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, and she passes on what she learned from him to each new batch.

The institute follows the guru-shishya way of learning: patient correction, regular practice, and respect for the art and for the people who carried it forward.
